Young Kappa Foundation Organization FAQs

  • What is the purpose of the program
  • What activities does the program include
  • How are young men selected for the program  – Through collaboration with parents, schools, churches, law enforcement and other community partners  
  • Is the program affiliated with schools  – There is no formal affiliation with any entities of the school district 
  • When and where are meetings / open to public  – Meetings are held at St Gerard Catholic Church at least monthly. Informal meeting will be scheduled based upon the needs of the program. Several public events are scheduled each year. 


  • Are donations tax deductible
  • How is funding allocated


  • Types of volunteers needed   – Mentors, chaperones, administrative support, speakers, community service sponsors, food service, professional services (counselors, tutors, financial advisors, trades people, automotive trainers, camping and survivalist coaches)
  • Time commitment  – Dependent upon role. Guidelines will be provided.
  • Are mentors and volunteers screened  – Yes, background checks are performed and training is provided




Industry Partner FAQs

  

  

1. How does it work?

The students are participants in the program, not employees of the corporate partner. The Industry Work Study Program communicates and requires compliance with all Department of Labor regulations. 

2. Will the students receive training before they begin working in our office?

Yes, students are trained in: 

  • •Communication and relationship building 
  • •Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • •Customer service skills 
  • •Standard office equipment operation 
  • •Office etiquette 
  • •Dressing for success 
  • •Conveying a positive first impression in the workplace 
  • •Phone skills 
  • •Filing and document handling 
  • •Confidentiality and ethics in the workplace 
  • •Workplace safety 
  • •Team building 

3. Do students choose where they work?

After considering students’ skill levels and interests and the skill sets needed by our sponsors, the Program staff will determine where students are placed. Typically this is associated with the student’s sponsor 

4. As a partnering business, what responsibilities do we have?

Your three biggest responsibilities are to: 

  • •Provide a positive work environment for the students. 
  • •Provide a supervisor who believes in the program and the success of YKF students. 
  • •Provide meaningful work exposure for the students and explain to them the importance of each role.  

5. If I have a problem with a student, do I deal with the student directly?

If there is ever an issue with a student in the workplace, you may deal with the student directly or you may contact the Industry Work Study Program Office. Students may be replaced if there are any issues. In these rare cases, another student will be assigned.

6. Why should a business participate in the program?

There are many reasons to participate:

  • •Students do not qualify as a headcount.
  • •Benefit your local community with immediate payoff.
  • •Develop a culture of community involvement among your employees.

7. Are there guarantees to ensure the success of the students and program?

Each student receives program credit for the work study program. Each student is also evaluated on his or her performance at least twice during the calendar year. Students also have an opportunity to evaluate their workplace.  Workshops are conducted throughout the year to assist students in their learning process.

8. Is there a dress code?

Students are held to strict standards. All students are required to wear workplace appropriate attire. Students must adhere to the dress code at all times.

9. Is it possible to hire students during school breaks?

Yes, it is possible to hire students during the school year in accordance with state and federal DOL regulations.

Real Estate

  • Research properties using Costar to assist brokers
  • Utilize public records websites to research property ownership
  • Create Facebook ads and update Twitter accounts
  • Review resumes, websites, documents and databases (MailChimp, Acumatica and Salesforce) to ensure accuracy

Legal

  • Call and send payment notifications for clients
  • Manage digital documents and ensure that all files are labeled and organized
  • Greet clients, transfer phone calls and validate parking tickets at reception
  • Assist in the marketing department with verifying information on the website and inventory of gifts

Architecture

  • Use Pivot Tables in Excel to generate project cost comparisons and reports of employee time submissions
  • Assist in designing spaces utilizing Rivet and materials selection
  • Research and call to verify vendor and client information and update database for employees, clients and vendors
  • Reimage computers and replace hard drives
  • Create client and employee profiles using Photoshop and InDesign to crop and update photos

Financial

  • Schedule interviews, create new hire packets and escort job candidates in the human resources department
  • Verify vendor compliance
  • Greet and help with customer transactions at the teller window and make deposits and withdrawals
  • Generate reports analyzing results of social media for companies and their competitors.
  • Plan and assist with outreach programs such as Community Reinvestment
